John James Puttrell

Submitted John James Puttrell.

John James was Colin’s Grand Father.

My grand father was a regular with the York & Lancs Regiment, number 7823,  and was killed on 23rd October 1914. Mother never knew him as she was born in 1914.We always considered him lost forever, but the Beauchamps Ligny project has renewed our hope of learning his fate.
Born at Sheffield in March 1883, he was killed in 1914 the same year that my mother (his daughter) was born. Unfortunately John's wife could not handle the  loss of her husband and she was institutionalised from 1914 to the end of her life. My mother endured being shuffled around various members of the Puttrell family until she married.
Mum never knew her father, but always said he was a big man, recently I obtained his army information and it note that in fact he was only 5ft 5inches and about 150 lb. Apart from the one  or two old and rather tattered photo's, that is all we have. John's father requested and received my grandfather's service medals and these are presumed now lost and so we have precious little to remember him by.
I really appreciate all that is being done and I would welcome any information that becomes available.
